Education
BA in graphic design – San Jose State University. Continued study – Art Center College of Design – Los Angeles (now Pasadena).
Numerous classes in drawing, painting, and illustration at the San Francisco Academy of Art College (now University).
Professional Experience
Advertising Art Director in early career. Book designer at Addison-Wesley Publishers. Long-time free-lance graphic designer working for IBM Corp., Simpson Strong-Tie Co., Hewlett-Packard Corp., ROLM Corporation, Sunset Magazine, and numerous others.
In recent years have added fine art pursuits with current watercolor show in the Art People Gallery in Crocker Galleria, San Francisco.
Awards/Exhibitions
Winner 2008 and 2009 University Art Open Art Competitions in watercolor division. Two paintings selected for Vol. II (2010) of “Best in America in Watermedia,” by Kennedy Publishing.
Teaching Experience
Has been teaching part-time in graphic design, software for graphic design and illustration, at Foothill & De Anza Colleges since the mid 70’s. Has taught graphic design at San Jose State University. Taught 15 years at the San Francisco Academy of Art College (now University), Held position of Department Chairman of Graphic Design for the last two years. Most recently taught illustration, watercolor, and figure drawing at Foothill College.
Philosophy
Believes students learn well in a relaxed atmosphere with clear goals set, methods explained and demonstrated. Allows for lots of exploration and making mistakes. Believes good drawing is a major key to painting success. Pushes more advanced students to achieve skill levels far beyond what they can imagine themselves.
Hobbies
Besides drawing and painting, enjoys tennis, sailing small boats, and martial arts. Holds a 1st degree black belt in Tang Soo Do, a Korean style (karate) martial art. Is a member of the American and National Watercolor Societies.
