Creative Music Makers Ages 3-4 yrs

Older children can continue their music adventures with these classes that have a different focus each session, making them perfect for students to take multiple times. Intro to Suzuki Violin i Ages 4-5

Begin your music adventure with box violin & dowel bow. Learn basics: posture, bow & violin hold. Develop fine motor skills & coordination specific to violin playing through games & exercises. Foundation allows children to produce beautiful sounds when making transition to real violin. Bring notebook for lesson notes.

Kiddie Keyboard PrepAges 4-6

Recommended as the second class for students interested in piano, this class offers a positive, enjoyable intro to piano & basic music notation symbols (quarter note, quarter rest, half note, half rest, dotted quarter note, whole note, whole rest). Without using a real keyboard, class familiarizes students with correct piano fingering & proper hand position. Some singing & movement also included. All materials included in class cost. (Little Mozart Book 1-music lesson, discovery & workbook plus CD).  Child must be age 4 by class start date & must be able to attend without parent/caregiver. Max: 12

Sound Sampler One-Day Workshops! Ages 5-13

Great opportunity for children considering private lessons to take a hands-on survey of instruments. No prior experience needed. Each session followed by Q&A with music faculty about instruments, curriculum, related topics. Parents/caregivers of all students are strongly encouraged to attend. Max: 25 per session

Preview Sessions

Interested parents & students, whether registered or not, are welcome to attend free of charge any preview session on a space-available basis. No advance reservations; attendees admitted (first-come, first-serve) on day of preview session.

Special Enrollment & Reimbursement Policy: Students may enroll in Intro Music Classes, subject to space availability, either before or after preview session. Full tuition reimbursement — less $10 non-refundable registration fee & $10 processing fee — available to registered students in Intro Music Classes for 3 days following preview session. Note: Attendance at preview session is not required to be eligible for this special reimbursement policy.

Preview sessions are held one week prior to start date. Classes having a Preview Session are denoted with an *asterisk.

For children currently taking private instrumental lessons. Reinforcement of skills, including note reading, rhythmic notation. Ear training/singing through musical exercises & games. Pitch awareness, rhythmic competency & appreciation for musical expression developed in a fun environment. Phrases, forms, meters introduced as well as some famous compositions & composers to give children a more complete picture of music. Children attend without parents/caregivers.  Max: 12

Learn basics of correct hand position, bowing, fingering, note reading & instrument care. Music selections provided by instructor. Class intended to prepare students for private lesson instruction. Learn to play guitar: open chords, "power" chords, strumming, finger picking, tuning, reading guitar tab & lots of songs! Minimum daily practice of 15 mins ensures getting most value from class. Instructor provides all music/handouts. Student provides own instrument. Perfect opportunity to play music together in this guaranteed fun class for the whole family! Beginners & experienced musicians welcome! Play exquisite handmade African hardwood marimbas in ensemble, but bring your violins, flutes or other instruments as well. Embark on a voyage of discovery where beginners & experienced, young & old, will blend beautiful music, culminating in a concert for family & friends. No previous experienced needed. Peninsula Children's ChoraleCore Curriculum Ages 9-12

Have fun in this performance-based resident children’s chorale singing music in a variety of genres. Includes vocal warmups, posture & presentation, musicianship, sight reading, memorization, some choreography. Final performance at end of semester. No prior experience needed.  Max: 20

Basics of Jazz Improv Beg Level

Sequential series of classes for learning the art of improv. Listening strategies, chord progressions, scales, reading, rehearsal technique. All jazz instruments welcome. Prereq: 2 yrs of private lessons or equiv. Audition & instructor’s permission required for all levels. Max: 10

Beg: Learn swing rhythm, simple chord progressions & their scales. Reading exercises. Improvising on easy progressions & tunes.

Learn to play music together! Beg/interm ensembles for strings, wind, brass, percussion.    

Beg Level Prereq: 1-2 yrs of private instruction; no prior ensemble experience required.

Interm Level Prereq: 3-4 yrs of private instruction; 1 yr of ensemble training. Leads to youth orchestra, band, jazz combos, chamber music. Pianists may join as opportunities arise.

First Week: All students attend first class for evaluation. Groups formed by level & ability; times arranged within printed ensemble hours.

Important: Due to the large number of waitlisted students for Core Curriculum Theory classes, registered students who do not attend the first class without prior notification of CSMA may lose their place in class.

Cello Workshop Ages 5-20

Unique annual CSMA workshop for all student cellists! Irene Sharp & colleagues explore the world of cello music & technique with solos, ensembles, theory, digital music activities. Work with accompanists, receive mall group lessons, technique classes, & cello choir rehearsals. Daily concert hall student performances (4-5 pm). Attendance required by all students. Max: 32  

It is strongly recommended that cellists under the age of 8 be accompanied by a parent or caregiver throughout the week.

School of Rock Workshop Ages 11-Teens (Gr. 6-12)

Marcos Saenz (guitar/bass/digital music), Carmen Cansino & Jim Kassis (drums), Alex Kerckhoff (guitar) & guest faculty

Work with professional musicians while learning the ins & outs of creating a rock group! Topics include: songwriting, band image, digital music, recording, & LOTS of hands-on practice. Conclude week with rock concert featuring all workshop bands playing two cover tunes & one original tune composed during the week. Pizza dinner on Fri prior to concert for performers & faculty; reception following concert. Max: 20

Receive one-on-one attention playing in a combo, exploring theory, working in digital music composition & recording. Break-out sessions for each instrument & jam sessions with faculty. Ensembles created based on level & experience. Final performance followed by reception. Max: 20

Faculty rehearse & perform with string students of all ages in large & small ensembles, featuring repertoire from baroque through contemporary music. Focus on individual & group coaching with emphasis on faculty/student collaboration, masterclasses & instrument sectionals. Includes final student & faculty performance. Creating Sound for Film & Video Beg Level, Ages 7-12 Core Curriculum

Make a sound track for an imaginary film or video! Write your story & action plot; add effects with foley sound; narrate & transform your voice in new ways; create music. Record sounds in the CSMA building, download public domain sounds from the web & integrate audio from your personal collection (iTunes, CDs, etc). Assemble, rearrange, transform & process using ProTools to make your unique track. Final project: class performance of sound track with storyboard or scene outline. Max: 8

Sequential series of classes for learning the art of improv. Listening strategies, chord progressions, scales, reading, rehearsal technique. All jazz instruments welcome. Beg: Learn swing rhythm, simple chord progressions & their scales. Reading exercises. Improvising on easy progressions & tunes.

Interm & Adv: Rehearse with the professionals! Join the faculty jazz instructors to learn techniques for soloing & playing together at different levels. Get all your questions answered: What are the basic tools in a jazz improviser’s toolbox? How do I approach doing basic song analysis so I can play through chord changes? How do I match scales to chords? Adv students will also study transcribed solos & adv tunes.
