How to Register
The Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) is in session
year-round on a semester system. Registration is open to all
ages and levels and no prior experience or audition is required
to enroll. At registration, students make a commitment to
a full semester. CSMA accepts new students after the semester
has begun on a space-available basis only.
New Student Registration is held
three times during the year, prior to the beginning of each
semester. Appointments are required for all new students.
Every effort is made to accommodate personal schedules and
individual needs by placing students with the most appropriate
teacher.
To schedule a registration appointment, please call Barbara Bernstein, Assistant to the Music School Director, at 650.917.6800 x330.
Continuing Students receive
registration materials in the mail that should be returned
to CSMA by the published deadline. Return may be made by mail,
fax or in person to the office. All processed registration forms are confirmed with a courtesy email.
Tuition/Fees
Private lesson tuition depends on the number of weeks in the
semester. Students must register for a full semester and payment
(tuition plus non-refundable $15 registration fee) is required
prior to the first lesson. If a student enrolls mid-semester,
the registration fee is not pro-rated.
In keeping with our mission, financial aid is offered to
qualified students. Work-study is available for adult students
(application & interview required). Merit Scholarships
are available by audition (held in May/June) for continuing
students. In addition, a payment plan may also be arranged
by contacting the Customer Service staff (a 5% fee will apply).

Aid Program offers tuition assistance for lessons.
To the extent funds permit, tuition assistance is available
on a sliding scale basis, based on family size and income.
Adults and young adults may also apply for work-study.
If you wish to apply for financial aid, please download the application form, or call our customer
service staff at 650.917.6800, ext. 0.
Merit Scholarships
Merit Scholarships, in the form of additional lesson time,
are awarded to students who show outstanding talent and commitment
to their studies. Teachers may nominate students after one
year of study at CSMA. Annual auditions are held in May/June.
Withdrawal/Refunds
Students may withdraw after taking one lesson. A pro-rated
tuition refund is given if a written request is received by
the office no later than 3 days after the first lesson.
After that time, no refunds or credits are granted.
Missed Lessons
Make-up lessons are always given if the missed lesson
is due to a teacher's absence. If the missed lesson is
due to the student's absence, a make-up lesson is given at
the teacher's discretion. As a courtesy to your teacher, please
notify the office in advance of any absence.
Leaves of Absence
In cases of emergency or serious illness, a leave of absence
may be requested. All requests must be made in writing to
the Music School Director. If approved, credit may be given
for those absences.

level students. For information, call our customer service
